In 1902, Mother Antonina Fischer and six Dominican Sisters carried the
Dominican torch of truth from Brooklyn, New York, to the plains of Kansas
to "teach poor children the Catholic religion." The Sisters
planted roots in Great Bend, began staffing several schools that fall,
and founded St. Rose hospital the next year. Following their founder's
dream to be a missionary, three sisters became the congregation's first
foreign missionaries in 1956, traveling to Nigeria, West Africa, to
minister to the needy there.
Today, our Sisters continue to work as missionaries abroad and at home.
We minister in many ways to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ: working
toward peace and justice, educating children
and adults, providing space for retreats and reflection, engaging in
pastoral ministry, serving the marginalized, providing healthcare, and
respecting all of creation. We are inspired by the Gospel of Jesus Christ,
the spirit of Dominic Guzman, the leadership of Antonina Fischer, and
our new Mission Statement, adopted in February 2002: We Dominicans
of Kansas, impelled by the Gospel of Jesus, are the Holy Preaching.
